Judges’ comments

Mercedes’ writing is a breath of fresh air. This is technical communication with a human touch.

The examples in this portfolio have a conversational tone that’s friendly as well as professional. There’s a light touch at play here, with contractions and direct language that will help readers feel supported and able to take action.

It’s obvious Mercedes has clear audiences in mind and has worked hard to tailor her writing and presentation of the material to their needs. One judge said: ‘I think if I was an HR practitioner, I’d feel as if Mercedes was holding my hand as I used the software.’

Media statement

I’m honoured and grateful to be named a finalist for the Best Plain Language Technical Communicator this year.

I’ve been a content developer for Fusion5 for just over three years, primarily documenting enhancements and building a knowledge base for two of our HR and payroll applications: Jemini and Jade Star.

Fusion5’s mantra is all about making potential reality. I believe it’s my job as a content developer to turn complex or confusing concepts into easily understandable content, helping our customers reach their potential when using our products. The recognition from the Plain Language Awards judges confirms that my efforts in this area have been successful.
