Why the member of the public nominated this entry

The member of the public who nominated the City Fitness Terms and Conditions document felt that the wording unfairly disadvantaged customers. They particularly pointed to a section about leaving the contract.

What the judges said

The judges agreed this document appeared to protect the company more than fully informing the customer. They said:

‘The document fails from the start by not explaining its purpose or clearly outlining a member’s key rights and obligations. Its legalistic and uninviting tone creates a barrier for readers. The structure is illogical and confusing, with important information hard to find and scattered across many sections. The judges also noted the overly long sentences and baffling legal jargon that make the content difficult to understand.’

Media statement

We’ll admit it, being a finalist in the People’s Choice Worst Brainstrain Communication category isn’t quite the recognition we were aiming for!

But we’re taking it on the chin and using it as a valuable reminder. Clear, easy-to-understand communication is something we care deeply about, and this nomination is a great reminder that there’s always room for improvement.

We know our Terms & Conditions could use a little less “legalese” and a bit more plain language. We’re already working on simplifying things so it’s easier for everyone to understand what they’re signing up for without the brainstrain.

At the end of the day, connecting with people in a clear, friendly, and transparent way is what we’re all about. So, thank you for the nudge, we’re on the case!
