Judges’ comments

The judges praised this document for its outstanding care and empathy. They noted that every element, from the tone to the structure, was clearly designed with the reader’s emotional state in mind.

The tone is supportive and emotionally accessible, which helps make the reader feel safe and understood. This approach perfectly supports the document’s clear purpose: to help people cope with trauma.

The writing and design work together to help readers who may be distressed. The judges highlighted the logical structure, which explains trauma before offering coping strategies. The content is accurate and gives just the right amount of information without being overwhelming. Short sentences, focused paragraphs, and a clear layout with effective headings and colour make the messages easy to absorb.

The judges were also impressed by the thorough user testing process. The authors involved frontline staff and clinical experts to ensure the document was safe, accurate, and genuinely helpful. The final result is an excellent example of how plain language can provide accessible and compassionate support.

Media statement

We’re honoured to be a finalist for the Best Plain Language Document — Private Sector at the 2025 Plain Language Awards for our resource Coping with Trauma.

Coping with Trauma represents a shift in how Manaaki Tāngata | Victim Support embraces plain language as a core part of how we support people affected by crime and traumatic events.

Every element, from tone to structure, was designed with the reader’s emotional state in mind.

When people are upset or in shock, information needs to be easy to read and navigate. We chose our words and layout carefully so people can find what they need straight away.

The resource helps people understand their responses to trauma, offers simple, practical ways to cope, and provides a gentle guide on what to do next.

By using plain language, we’re better able to meet victims where they are — offering support that is accessible, compassionate, and truly centred on their needs.

We believe clear language is part of showing respect and care. Being a finalist shows that our effort to make information simple and helpful is making a real difference for the people we support.
