Judges’ comments

It’s clear from the glowing reviews Phil has received from many of the Medical Assurance Society’s partners that he’s made a significant and influential contribution to their plain language initiative, with great results. He shows an admirable mindset, dedication, and perseverance for the ultimate goal — clear communication with the reader truly at the heart.

Phil’s entry shows his commitment to, and belief in, plain language — it shines bright in the way he communicates to his organisation about what it means to their customers. And it shows why plain language is important for their people. He has clearly inspired others and strengthened the organisation’s relationships with customers and stakeholders. Well done, Phil!

Media statement

I’m a firm believer in the value of plain language for our Members — there is no doubt that it has led to higher Member satisfaction. The documents we have revised are now more easily understood and accessible. It’s also contributed to business growth.

I’m really honoured to be recognised as a Plain Language Champion and would like to thank my team at MAS, and other colleagues who have supported this work. Insurance can be complex and full of jargon so I was keen to embrace the challenge and play a leadership role in transforming our documents for Life and Disability Insurance. It’s been time consuming work but totally worth the effort.

Having been on the plain language journey for some years now, I encourage individuals and organisations to see the difference plain language can make in connecting with others using clear, effective communications. There are only win–wins.
