Plain Language, Health Literacy and Engagement Team, SEHCP Inc (trading as enliven Victoria)

Judges’ comments

enliven Victoria’s commitment to plain language shows in how many organisations, communities, and vulnerable people they’ve helped with plain language health communication They’ve taught, led, and built a reputation for themselves as plain language writers, by lifting the profile and value of plain language. This work has led to many more organisations and community groups asking for their expertise and support.

We love that multiple team members have volunteered on plain language sub-committees and working groups — another sign of true commitment. They’re showing that it’s not just a job — it’s something they really believe in. We were impressed by how the organisation has been able to adapt plain language into a variety of types of documents and forms.

The examples enliven Victoria included with their entry are also very good evidence of plain language and easy English in practice. All the examples are simple, clean, easy to understand, and inclusive. Each document feels like they’ve really thought about and empathised with their readers. They have a very real impact on people’s lives by helping them understand how to stay safe and well.

This is a very good entry overall, and a very deserving finalist!

Media statement

enliven Victoria has been working in the health literacy and plain language field for many years. This has been further developed and refined in recent years by our experience working closely with Australia’s most culturally diverse communities in Melbourne’s southeast.

Throughout the pandemic, it became clear that complex messaging has minimal impact with many members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities and other priority populations. This reinforces the importance of plain language and is where enliven Victoria focused much of its work. We also work with a range of community organisations to promote the principles of plain language communication and provide training and customised support to improve their communication strategies.

enliven Victoria voluntarily participates on international and Australian Standards groups for the promotion of the soon-to-be-released International Plain Language Standard and is committed to contributing to the advancement of plain language at all levels and across all sectors. We are honoured to be considered as finalists for the Plain Language Champion — Best Individual or Team category.
