Judges comments

Compared to the original, this document is a strong turnaround with good intent and motivation behind it. This entry feels like it is embedded in a consistent kaupapa and practice and in relationships of trust and care.

The best parts are how well it has been condensed, the removal of unnecessary information, and how quickly students can find the information they need. The restructure feels supportive, simple and effective, giving students everything they need in a logical order.

The document will improve students’ wellbeing and will be an excellent teaching tool. Well done!

Media release

I am thrilled to accept this award on behalf of all tertiary students in New Zealand.

Tertiary education is expensive for governments and individuals. Data shows that up to one third of tertiary students drop out before completing their qualifications.

There are many expensive programmes in place to support students, but the easiest and most effective way to help all students is to provide content and assessments in plain language. Giving clear and concise instructions in assessments allows students to spend their time and energy working on their answers, not on interpreting the question.
